Chapter Seven: Ye Yuan Falls into a Coma

Cong Gui was startled and quickly grabbed Ye Yuan’s arm from behind, preventing him from falling to the ground. Supporting Ye Yuan, he could still hear the old man murmuring, “Save Yan An…”
“Medic! Medic!!”
Cong Gui turned and shouted wildly, his voice already hoarse from urgency.
A young soldier quickly ran off into the distance.
Cong Gui called over two other young soldiers to help support Ye Yuan.
Then he approached Liu Ting. “What are you doing here? Don’t you know that photographing or filming inside a military base is forbidden?”
“We’re from the provincial TV station. We came to interview the old master Ye’s granddaughter, but unexpectedly ran into the old master himself. Upon learning that Ye Yan An had been kidnapped, we followed here,” Liu Ting explained hurriedly. “I didn’t film anything inside the base; I understand military discipline. My father—”
Before she could finish, Cong Gui waved his hand to cut her off.
He paused thoughtfully, then said, “You may continue reporting, but no reckless filming, understood?”
“Understood, understood,” Liu Ting nodded repeatedly.
Soon, a medic arrived carrying a large box.
He examined Ye Yuan’s condition, then looked up at Cong Gui. “Commander, this old gentleman is fine—just an emotional shock.”
“A nap will do. Do you want to wake him up now or let him wake naturally?”
“Wake him now.”
Cong Gui answered.
“All right.”
The medic nodded and pulled out a large sewing needle from the medical kit.
He grasped Ye Yuan’s hand, preparing to prick the space between his fingernails with the needle.
Quick as a flash, Cong Gui kicked the medic to the ground.
“You call this waking him up?”
Suppressing a string of curses, Cong Gui glared fiercely at the medic.
The medic scrambled up, bewildered. “But you said wake him now. At this level of unconsciousness, a simple pinch won’t work.”
That was the medic’s way—treat the most urgent problem first, then consider the side effects later.
Cong Gui gritted his teeth for a long moment before finally asking, “How long will it take for the old hero to wake on his own?”
The medic thought for a moment. “A few hours, maybe.”

“Then we wait.”
Cong Gui took a deep breath and stepped aside, his brow furrowed in intense inner struggle.
Five seconds later,
“Lives are at stake, especially the granddaughter of a national hero!”
He spun around sharply, his gaze razor-sharp. “Although intervening directly in this case breaks regulations, the situation is special and urgent! We cannot stand idly by!”
Looking at the unconscious old man on the sofa, his chest marked with countless scars, Cong Gui swore silently to himself:
Never let a hero bleed and weep again; never let his granddaughter become the next sacrifice!
“Send a few people to watch Liu Dehai’s house. Report any of his movements to me immediately. The rest, wait until the old hero wakes.”
Though he wished to personally help rescue Ye Yuan’s granddaughter, the military had its own discipline.
Cong Gui was in charge of flood control work in Hehe County and could not interfere directly. He had to report this to the city military district.
After giving his orders, Cong Gui glanced at the medic again. “Since you’re here, help me check the old hero’s condition. He’s a national treasure—we can’t afford any mistakes.”
“Understood.”
The medic nodded.
Several young soldiers carried Ye Yuan into Cong Gui’s office.
With Cong Gui’s approval, Sun Ting and the cameraman also arrived.
They laid Ye Yuan flat on the sofa. The medic glanced at Cong Gui. “Commander, shall I begin?”
“Go ahead.”
Cong Gui nodded but added anxiously, “Be gentle! If you hurt the old hero, I’ll deal with you myself!”
The medic was silent, then reached out and unbuttoned Ye Yuan’s military uniform.
“This uniform’s seen some age…”
The medic muttered, “What era is this style from?”
As he spoke, he opened the chest area of Ye Yuan’s uniform.
The room fell into dreadful silence.
“Ah!”
Sun Ting covered her mouth, her almond-shaped eyes wide with tears instantly welling up.
Cong Gui’s fierce eyes widened; his body trembled with shock.
“This… this…”
The medic squatted beside Ye Yuan, nearly incoherent.
Everyone stared in silence at the scarred chest of Ye Yuan for a long time.
After a while,

The medic finally turned his head and spoke with difficulty, “Comm… Commander… what exactly is the background of this old… old hero?”
“I don’t know,” Cong Gui replied with a bitter smile. “Keep checking.”
Then Cong Gui turned to Sun Ting, his voice trembling. “Miss Sun, due to military discipline, many matters are beyond my authority. I must report this.”
“As for this old hero… let the story be told… let those who must see it see it.”
Sun Ting regained her composure and shakily raised her hand to film the scars on Ye Yuan’s chest.
“Rolling.”
She choked back tears as she spoke to the cameraman.
Once the camera started, Sun Ting’s voice broke with sobs. “We’ve entered the base… because the old hero was overcome with emotion, he fainted…”
Her voice grew more choked and intermittent. “This old hero has survived countless life-and-death battles… he will be fine, but I hope everyone can pray for his health and longevity…”
After these words, Sun Ting could no longer hold back and collapsed, sobbing on the floor.
She had seen many scars on her own father.
Her father once proudly told her these were indelible medals, proof of guarding their homeland.
But…
None of her father’s scars came close to the multitude that covered Ye Yuan’s chest…
“What?!”
Liu Dehai listened to his subordinate’s report, eyes wide with disbelief. “You said that old man was carried into the base? And there are soldiers guarding outside my house?”
He hadn’t expected that the dying Ye Yuan still wielded such power!
He knew military discipline well.
The unit stationed there was responsible for flood control. He was certain they wouldn’t intervene in this matter.
Even if they reported it, by the time officials arrive, he would have finished the operation, disposed of Ye Yan An’s body, and denied any involvement—case closed.
But he hadn’t anticipated that the base commander, Cong Gui, would defy regulations to station guards outside his home.
Now,
Any rash move on his part would get him caught red-handed!
“Damn that old bastard!”
Liu Dehai smashed the ashtray to the ground in rage.
“Old man, do you really think you can bring me down?!”
