Chapter 12: “I’m Jealous, Petty, and Possessive”

Song Xi did not dare look at him at all. She simply blurted everything out.
“I’m truly sorry, Mr. Jing. If I had known you were looking for a wife to conceal your sexual orientation, I never would have agreed to register our marriage.”
“Although you’re very wealthy and offered me a great deal, I’m a normal woman. Even if I can’t find anyone else to marry, I can’t take a husband who is… like that. So we should get divorced. If we go to the Civil Affairs Bureau now, we can even save ourselves one day of the mandatory cooling-off period.”
The more Song Xi spoke, the more calculating she felt this man was.
No wonder he had taken both marriage certificates away on the very day they registered their marriage.
So this was what he had been waiting for.
“That was my younger brother.”
Jing Zhuo’s expression darkened as he offered that brief explanation.
“I understand, I do. In your circle, everyone calls each other brothers. The sugar daddy is the older brother, and the kept boy is the younger brother. I understand everything. I’m very open-minded!”
Song Xi pleaded with him earnestly. “But I really can’t accept being married to a gay man, Mr. Jing. You’ll certainly find a better business partner. Let’s get divorced.”
She was completely lost in the world of her own imagination.
Jing Zhuo pinched the bridge of his nose and patiently explained, “You’ve misunderstood. He is my biological younger brother. I’m his biological older brother. There is no relationship between us beyond blood.”
“Biological brothers?”
They were related by blood?
Who was he trying to fool?
Song Xi seized the opportunity to frighten him, speaking faster than she could think. “Then that’s even worse! According to the rumors, Zhang Hexing’s older brother is stern and old-fashioned, fierce and cold, and likes punishing people with push-ups, military posture drills, and self-criticisms. He’s nearly thirty, too, and the age gap is so huge. We’re completely unsuitable for each other. There would be an enormous generation gap between us. We absolutely have to get divorced!”
This was the longest, most impassioned speech she had given since meeting him.
Jing Zhuo’s body, which had been leaning against the back of his chair, stiffened. His breathing stopped for several seconds, followed by more than ten seconds of silence, as though he had been gravely insulted.
After a long while, he suddenly said expressionlessly, “You’re right. I am his patron.”
“Zhang Hexing and I are not related by blood at all.”

Song Xi wore an expression that said, “I knew it,” having never believed for a moment that he was Zhang Hexing’s biological brother.
Although the two men did bear some resemblance around the eyes and brows—both were devastatingly handsome—their surnames were worlds apart.
One was surnamed Zhang, the other Jing. How could they possibly be family?
Besides, she had once asked Zhang Hening about it. She knew the names of all three Zhang siblings.
The eldest was Zhang Henian.
The second was Zhang Hexing.
The youngest was Hening.
Not one of them had anything to do with someone surnamed Jing.
Song Xi was thinking only of divorce. “Then we’ll get div—”
“But my sexual orientation is perfectly normal. That night was my first time. There is nothing improper between Zhang Hexing and me. He is merely one of the artists under my management. I am a completely normal man who upholds traditional virtue. I was not looking for a wife to conceal my orientation, and I did not deceive you.”
Jing Zhuo cut off her thoughts before she could finish.
“So you are my lawful and legitimate wife, not a wife married to a gay man. There is even less reason for us to divorce.”
Song Xi was stunned.
She had not expected him to explain everything so clearly. Could this really have been nothing more than a misunderstanding?
But she was not that gullible.
She eyed him suspiciously. “Then why did Zhang Hexing sign with you? They said he’s the only artist signed under your company and that he’s your kept boy. What exactly is your relationship?”
Jing Zhuo did not spare Zhang Hexing any dignity. “He lacks ability and hasn’t made much of himself. His father privately asked me to help him with his resources.”
“Really?”
Jing Zhuo drew a deep breath and analyzed the situation for her. “The Zhang family is fairly well-off. He could never be a kept boy. If he sacrificed his looks and let some man abuse him in exchange for resources, his father and older brother would break his legs.”
That did make sense.
Song Xi knew the Zhang family fairly well. Naturally, she knew they were comfortably wealthy and that Zhang Hexing had entered the entertainment industry merely for fun.

It seemed the man before her had a good relationship with the Zhang family’s elders; otherwise, he would not have known their circumstances so well.
Realizing that she had misunderstood, Song Xi secretly let out a sigh of relief.
Thank goodness she was not sharing a husband with another man.
Otherwise… No matter how she thought about it, it was revolting.
But there was still one final inconsistency.
Song Xi looked at him. “Then why did you suddenly appear there and hold hands with Zhang Hexing so intimately onstage?”
“Because I was jealous,” the man replied calmly.
“What?”
“My wife was on a livestream, blushing and confessing her feelings to another man, giving another man a gift, and shyly embracing another man. I was jealous. I’m petty. I got jealous.”
“So I went up there and separated the two of you.”
“I never expected it to cause such a huge misunderstanding. You weren’t the third wheel. He was.”
The man spoke each word with utter seriousness and reason. Sincerity filled the corners of his eyes and brows. Through those dark eyes, Song Xi could see no trace of guilt or deceit.
It was as though every word had taken root and landed heavily in her heart.
Song Xi stood there with her mouth open for a long while, unable to speak.
“You—you—you…”
“So,” the man said, looking at her, a faint smile touching his refined features, “Mrs. Jing, do you still want a divorce?”
Song Xi: “…”
“Wife, will you come home with me?”
Song Xi: “……”
