Chapter 6: Love-Struck to the Point Even Zombies Disdain It

Zhou Yinhe fought the urge to step forward and embrace Wen Ling, instead asking calmly, “What’s going on? The gala is about to start.”
He glanced at the suit draped over Wen Ling’s shoulders, then at the man standing close by who was now down to just a shirt. Zhou’s gaze was as cold and sharp as an ice blade, causing the man to tremble.
Ruan Miaomiao, seeing him, hurried over and pleaded anxiously, “Senior Yinhe, my cousin is falsely accusing me of pushing her, but I really didn’t! I have no reason to do such a thing.”
Wen Ling gave Zhou Yinhe a sorrowful look, lowered her eyes, pressed her lips together, and clutched the suit tighter around her. The onlookers, witnessing this, grew even more suspicious.
Jiang Jibai turned his head to look at Zhou Yinhe and saw his jaw tightening as he clenched his fists, clearly feeling pain for Wen Ling. He sighed and crouched beside her, speaking calmly, “Whether you fell by yourself or someone pushed you, you should change your clothes first. Catching a cold wouldn’t be good.”
Wen Ling tilted her head, looked at the impassive Zhou Yinhe, and bit her lip before nodding slightly.
She struggled to stand, nearly stumbling. From the corner of her eye, she saw Zhou Yinhe step forward, but Jiang Jibai quickly caught her, causing Zhou to pause.
Once steady, Wen Ling pushed Jiang Jibai’s hand away and slowly walked up to Zhou Yinhe, her voice neither too loud nor too soft as she explained, “You know I once fell into the estate’s lake and nearly drowned. Since then, I haven’t even dared to take a bath.”
Zhou Yinhe’s jaw twitched, but he said nothing.
Wen Ling averted her gaze and brushed past him.
She didn’t need to explain—after all, she was the one who fell into the lake. But she feared Zhou Yinhe would be swayed by the original story’s plot and believe Ruan Miaomiao’s words.
No matter what the crowd said or did, she could ignore it, but if Zhou Yinhe doubted her, she might break down.
After Wen Ling left, Ruan Miaomiao continued to explain to Zhou Yinhe, who frowned deeply, looked down at her, and said coldly, “So you’re saying Wen Ling risked her life just to frame you?”
Ruan Miaomiao hastily shook her head and pleaded, “I really didn’t push her; she fell on her own. Senior Yinhe, please believe me!”
Zhou Yinhe’s cold glare radiated such hostility that the onlookers instinctively stepped back.
Ji Wanruo and Li Wanzhen rushed over, followed by others who had heard the news but didn’t know the details.
They had overheard someone in the auditorium say someone had fallen into the lake near the shore, apparently pushed, and instinctively assumed Ruan Miaomiao had been the one pushed by Wen Ling. So they hurried over.
But now, the situation was quite different…

Ruan Miaomiao was still explaining to Zhou Yinhe, but Wen Ling had disappeared.
The two women could only approach Ruan Miaomiao and ask, “What’s going on, Miaomiao? What happened here?”
Ruan Miaomiao grabbed their hands and pushed them forward, saying, “Senior Yinhe, these two were once Wen Ling’s close friends. You can ask them—they know Wen Ling’s true nature better than anyone. She deliberately jumped in to frame me!”
They exchanged glances and quickly caught on, saying, “Wen Ling has always been arrogant and ruthless. If she wanted to frame Miaomiao, she wouldn’t hesitate to risk her life.”
Suddenly, Zhou Yinhe smiled, watching the three of them as if they were a joke.
Others might not know, but he did. He knew just how terrified Wen Ling was of water—she hadn’t even dared to bathe or shower alone since that near-drowning incident and needed him by her side. Would she really risk her life to frame someone as insignificant as Ruan Miaomiao?
Although Wen Ling had abandoned him, making him bitter with hatred, he had never believed those baseless rumors.
Zhou Yinhe, tired of their arguing, cast a cold glance once more at the man fitting Wen Ling’s suit, then turned and walked away.
Jiang Jibai couldn’t help but smile and followed him. Qi Zhan, usually straightforward and oblivious to others’ schemes, scratched his head in confusion and hurried after them.
On the narrow path, only the three of them remained.
Qi Zhan asked curiously, “I don’t get it—what’s really going on here?”
Jiang Jibai raised an eyebrow and nodded toward Zhou Yinhe ahead, whose aura radiated frustration and dissatisfaction.
He teased, “It’s all because of Xiao Wu—jealousy and rivalry.”
Zhou Yinhe frowned and looked back at him.
Jiang Jibai approached with a smirk and casually asked, “Are you really so sure Ruan Miaomiao pushed Wen Ling?”
“What do you mean?” Zhou Yinhe replied coldly.
Jiang Jibai smiled and said, “Women will do anything out of jealousy. There’s already suspicion about Wen Ling falling into the water. Even if Ruan Miaomiao is foolish, she wouldn’t act so openly in front of everyone. But Wen Ling fell in front of a crowd—that’s quite the coincidence, isn’t it?”
He watched Zhou Yinhe’s expression darken and continued with a grin, “Do you think Wen Ling is innocent? If she were, she wouldn’t have taken over the Wen family business only to hand it off to her adopted younger brother and then come alone to Huaguo.”
Zhou Yinhe’s eyelid twitched, eyes narrowing as he spoke harshly, “Just because he dumped me doesn’t mean you can be biased against her. I’m the only one who knows how terrified she is of water. There’s no way she’d risk her life to frame someone.” He turned and walked on, voice firmer, “Don’t look at her through colored glasses.”

Jiang Jibai suppressed a laugh. Qi Zhan finally understood the situation and frowned as he watched his good friend’s sullen back, knowingly asking, “Is he?”
Jiang Jibai replied, “Yeah, lovesick fool. Even zombies would reject him.”
“…” Qi Zhan agreed, “Yeah, you’re right.”
Wen Ling returned to the car, changed into the clothes she had prepared earlier, and only then did the driver, Old Liu, get in and ask, “Miss, shall we head back?”
Wen Ling had initially wanted to attend the gala, but after thinking it over, she decided against it. She had just forced herself to jump into the water despite her fear, and her heart was still pounding wildly.
“Let’s go home.”
Old Liu, seeing her pale face and wet hair, worried she might catch a cold. He braked sharply and, while waiting at a traffic light, sent a message to the family doctor, telling him to wait at the miss’s villa entrance.
As soon as Wen Ling got out, the family doctor Qiao Hongyun rushed over, first measuring her forehead temperature, then checking her pulse.
Wen Ling silently withdrew her hand and looked at the doctor who had cared for her since childhood.
“Auntie, what are you doing?”
Qiao Hongyun asked anxiously, “Do you feel unwell? Dizzy? The lake water was so dirty—did you swallow any? Let me examine you quickly.”
Wen Ling sighed in helplessness, “Auntie, I’m really fine.”
“No, I have to check to be sure. Your grandfather has repeatedly told me to send him weekly health reports on you. If you get sick, your grandfather will blame us for not taking good care of you.”
Wen Ling: “…”
