This time, hauling goods kept Li Junsheng busy until noon, and it was only then that he brought home food packed from a restaurant. Thinking of the pile of scrap materials in the workshop, his mood was buoyant; he longed to return and have a small drink. Those scraps, once sold, would bring in a handsome sum.

As he neared his doorstep, Li Junsheng saw Ma Yulian peering outside. Their eyes met, and Ma Yulian instinctively looked away, guilty and evasive. Li Junsheng sneered inwardly. What scheme was this woman plotting now? No matter what, he would never agree to let her marry Xiaoyu off to such a despicable man.

Ignoring her, Li Junsheng carried his food and made for the house, but Ma Yulian stepped forward and blocked his path. What happened next made him feel as though he’d seen a ghost: Ma Yulian actually smiled at him, putting him instantly on guard. Her smiles never boded well.

“What do you want now?” Li Junsheng asked coldly, suspicion growing. Was she after his money, seeing he’d come home with restaurant food and cash in hand?

But Ma Yulian said, “About Xiaoyu’s marriage—I want to talk with you again. Zhigang is really decent…”

She still hadn’t given up! Still wanted to marry her daughter to that ugly convict.

Li Junsheng cut her off, face icy. “There’s nothing to discuss! I said she won’t marry him, and that’s final. If you think a convict is so great, you marry him yourself. Don’t think I know nothing about Liu Zhigang.”

“Ma Yulian, if you want money, at least have some decency. How is this different from selling your own daughter? If you dare lay a hand on Xiaoyu, I won’t spare you!”

He spoke angrily, shoved Ma Yulian aside, and headed for home. But she grabbed his arm, pulling him back.

“If you won’t agree to the marriage, come with me to Liu Zhigang’s house and explain it to them yourself.”

“You caused this mess, you deal with it. What, are you afraid Liu Zhigang will stab you?” Li Junsheng mocked, pushing her away again, intent on returning home. Ma Yulian lunged at him, this time clinging to his waist.

“Aren’t you going to check on Second Daughter and her three girls?” she said, eyes darting, speaking cryptically.

Li Junsheng sensed something was wrong. Ma Yulian didn’t want him to enter the house today—something must have happened inside. He felt a sudden tightness in his chest, dropped the food on the ground, pried Ma Yulian’s hands off him, and burst through the door without another word.

Inside, he saw a half-eaten feast on the table, and the bedroom door—which was usually open—was now tightly shut. His heart skipped a beat; a terrible suspicion flashed through his mind. His ears began to buzz.

Ma Yulian rushed in behind him, flustered, trying to distract him, blocking his way with awkward small talk.

“You must be hungry. The food outside is no good, but there’s wine and dishes here. Have a drink?”

Wang Xiuhua exchanged a glance with Ma Yulian and joined in, tugging at Li Junsheng.

“Father-in-law, you must be tired from your errands. Let me fetch some good wine and have Mother pour you a glass…”

The sense of foreboding grew stronger. Ma Yulian and Wang Xiuhua were never so attentive; today, they were being overly solicitous, all to keep him away from Ma Yulian’s bedroom. What was inside?

“Get out of my way!” Li Junsheng roared, shoving Ma Yulian and Wang Xiuhua so hard they fell to the floor. Seizing the moment, he ran to Ma Yulian’s bedroom and kicked the hinges off the door.

As the door swung open, he saw everything: Liu Zhigang was sprawled atop Li Xiaoyu, desperately trying to strip her clothes. Li Xiaoyu’s garments were half undone. Had he come any later, disaster would have struck.

Li Xiaoyu lay motionless, eyes tightly shut—clearly drugged.

Liu Zhigang was oblivious, intent on committing his crime. Li Junsheng shouted, “You animal! Get off her!”

He clenched his fists and landed a punch on Liu Zhigang’s neck, knocking him off Li Xiaoyu. Without pause, he pummeled him repeatedly, nearly smashing Liu Zhigang’s head. After beating him, Li Junsheng covered his daughter with a quilt.

Thankfully, Liu Zhigang hadn’t succeeded. Otherwise, no one would walk away alive today.

As Li Junsheng tended to his daughter, Liu Zhigang, clutching his face, tried to crawl away. Hearing the commotion, Li Junsheng grabbed his hair and kicked him viciously in the groin.

At this moment, Li Junsheng’s face was fierce and terrifying, so much so that Ma Yulian and Wang Xiuhua were stunned, too scared to intervene.

“Aah!” Liu Zhigang’s screams echoed through the whole building, sounding like a pig being slaughtered. Li Junsheng kicked him several more times, crippling him.

Ma Yulian had never seen Li Junsheng so brutal; she stood frozen, dumbstruck. Liu Zhigang’s miserable cries stirred the whole building, everyone curious about the commotion.

Especially Zhang Lan, who recognized her son’s screams and rushed over. Seeing the scene, she wailed in horror.

“My son! Please, someone take my son to the hospital!”

Liu Zhigang’s crotch was soaked in blood, and he had passed out from the pain. Zhang Lan, frantic, could only think of getting him to the hospital.

Ma Yulian and Wang Xiuhua, regaining their senses, hurried to help. But Li Junsheng wasn’t finished; he yanked Ma Yulian back, slapped her repeatedly, then gripped her neck tightly.

Wang Xiuhua watched in terror—her father-in-law looked ready to kill.

“You vile woman! After all your evil deeds, I’ll strangle you!” Li Junsheng squeezed Ma Yulian’s throat ruthlessly.

Chaos erupted. Wang Xiuhua shouted for help. Zhang Lan called the police and attacked Li Junsheng.

Neighbors burst in to witness the carnage and quickly pulled Li Junsheng away. Ma Yulian’s eyes rolled back, nearly suffocated, but once freed, she gasped greedily for air, her gaze toward Li Junsheng filled with fear.

For the first time, she felt true murderous intent from the usually meek Li Junsheng—he really wanted to kill her.
