Chapter One Hundred and Ten: The Faceless Man Appears Again
“Perfect timing. I’m hungry too!”
Those words had not come from Xu Zhong.
The hairs all over Zhou Yang’s body stood on end. Only then did he realize that there was a third person in this cavern dwelling.
But by the time he understood what was happening, he was already dead.
His undying spirit-light was reborn within the Outer Scenery, while his three souls and seven spirits, fresh as if newly born, rejoined the undying spirit-light.
The instant he revived, he saw a faceless man chewing carefully on his corpse. Sensing his rebirth, the man turned toward him and flashed a grin.
The man plainly had no face, yet Zhou Yang could somehow feel that he was smiling.
That smile sent a chill through him.
He tried to flee, only to see the faceless man exhale.
With a soft pop, his three souls, seven spirits, and undying spirit-light scattered into eleven balls of radiance. The faceless man then kneaded them with his hands until they resembled eleven lumps of dough.
Using those “lumps of dough,” he continued eating Zhou Yang’s corpse.
Then, as though remembering something, he extended one of the “lumps” toward Xu Zhong.
“Want to try some? It doesn’t have much flavor.”
Xu Zhong’s flesh broke out in gooseflesh. He stared blankly and shook his head.
“Suit yourself!”
The faceless man withdrew the “lump” and devoured Zhou Yang until not a trace remained. Still unsatisfied, he reached out and tore open Zhou Yang’s nearly collapsed Outer Scenery.
He refined the Outer Scenery into a pill and swallowed it.
“Don’t look at me like that.” The faceless man belched. It was impossible to tell whether it was the belch of someone full or hungry.
Judging from the way he licked his fingers, however, he clearly had not eaten his fill.
“As expected, the Zhou family tastes best.”
Xu Zhong’s scalp prickled.
At that moment, the faceless man’s body was covered in countless tiny openings, like a sieve riddled with holes.
The power of creation and destruction lurked within every opening. Yin and yang revolved, generating and overcoming one another, as though each aperture contained a miniature star brimming with terrifying power.
That power was being refined by the faceless man, bit by bit.
“It’s a shame the Zhou family’s ancestor ran too quickly. I couldn’t catch him even after giving chase.” The faceless man sighed, then shook his head. “Even his countless-great-grandson tastes this good. I can only imagine how much more delicious the ancestor himself must be.”
Xu Zhong could even see him swallow.
“But you’re not bad either!”
The faceless man looked over.
His eyes were filled with desire.
Xu Zhong instinctively tried to run.
But only then did he discover that he could no longer move.
Looking inward, he found that the faceless man’s power had already penetrated deep into his body, binding both him and his Golden Core Dao Tree.
“I spent over a million years cultivating that Dao Tree, only for someone else to pluck its fruit.” The faceless man paced around Xu Zhong. “Tell me, how could I possibly accept that?”
He reached into the space between heaven and earth and drew out lunar energy. Opening his mouth, he exhaled solar energy. Using these two forces as his foundation and blending them with other powers, he conjured a pill cauldron from nothing.
He then took out, piece by piece, the blood of several Primordial Gods and even a Creator.
The blood was shaped like crimson jade, clear and luminous. It radiated a soothing fragrance that caused all Xu Zhong’s meridians to open. He inhaled the aroma, and when it entered his abdomen, it transformed into primordial energy.
Qi!
The word escaped Xu Zhong’s lips as he stared at the blood.
Those who refined qi and sought the Dao did so for this single breath of qi.
To obtain qi was to obtain the Dao.
Thus, in Xu Zhong’s eyes, those drops of blood became immeasurably precious.
They seemed to carry the Dao itself.
To a qi cultivator, a single drop of blood from a Primordial God or Creator was an ultimate opportunity that might never be encountered in a lifetime.
Yet the faceless man treated the divine blood like ordinary paste used by a paper-mounter, dipping his fingers into it and smearing it across the pill cauldron.
“What are you doing?” Xu Zhong asked with a frown.
Watching the faceless man’s actions, he found the scene absurd—and terrifying at the same time.
“What do you think I’m doing?” The faceless man smiled. “Naturally, I’m going to refine the Dao Tree out of your body.”
“This pill cauldron is meant to turn you into a part of the Dao Tree.”
Once he had nearly finished forging the cauldron, he lifted Xu Zhong by one hand and stuffed him inside.
Then he opened his mouth and spat out Samadhi True Fire.
This was Samadhi True Fire of the Primordial God level.
Even lunar and solar energy could be ignited by it.
Had the faceless man not coated the outside of the pill cauldron with a layer of divine blood, the cauldron would likely have melted into liquid on the spot.
The Samadhi True Fire now used the divine blood as fuel, blazing fiercely and enveloping the entire cauldron.
Strangely, however, there was not much Samadhi True Fire inside the cauldron, nor was there the intense heat Xu Zhong had expected.
Everywhere he looked, holy radiance had condensed into a faint mist, while dense spiritual energy drifted and flowed through the air.
That spiritual energy streamed into him through every pore of his body.
But in the next instant, the misty spiritual energy transformed into threads of Samadhi True Fire, which began blazing within him.
Puff!
The qi and blood inside Xu Zhong surged upward, yet before they even reached his mouth, they had already transformed into Samadhi True Fire. He opened his mouth and spat out a stream of it.
At that moment, Xu Zhong’s entire body was filled with flowing Samadhi True Fire.
The flames moved like swimming dragons, winding between his blood and bones.
At the same time, the Red Crow Pill within him suddenly activated. Like an oceanic eye, it swallowed the Samadhi True Fire.
“Could this Red Crow Pill be capable of devouring heat, then feeding that heat back into the blood and heart?”
Xu Zhong was dumbstruck as he sensed the Red Crow Pill circling above his heart.
The Red Crow Pill continuously devoured the Samadhi True Fire, then released poisonous flames that scorched his heart and blood vessels. Yet those flames were refined and swallowed by the Samadhi True Fire coursing through his blood.
At that moment, Xu Zhong’s body seemed to have become the site of an extreme tug-of-war.
After devouring the Samadhi True Fire, the Red Crow Pill gradually regained its vitality and spirit. The filth covering its surface slowly fell away, revealing its original form.
“Is this the heart of a Golden Crow?” Xu Zhong blurted out as he stared at the Red Crow Pill.
Wasn’t the Red Crow simply another name for the Golden Crow?
Xu Zhong smiled wryly.
He had never imagined that the one who would ultimately save his life would be the Golden Crow he himself had driven into a desperate corner.
“Though the Golden Crow is the essence of fire, this heart is of poor quality. It probably won’t last long.”
This was Samadhi True Fire of the Primordial God level, naturally powerful beyond measure.
Had it been the heart of a Golden Crow at the Primordial God level, Xu Zhong would have had nothing to fear. But this was merely the heart of a Golden Crow from the Realm of Riding Objects. The prospects of it completely absorbing all that Samadhi True Fire were decidedly bleak.
At that thought, Xu Zhong began racking his brains for a solution.
Outside, the faceless man could barely contain his ecstasy.
“Just imagine—if I refine the incarnation of the Heavenly Dao into my Dao Tree as well, how powerful will that Dao Tree become?”
“Even the Dao Tree once possessed by the Thunder Ancestor might not compare with mine.”
Laughing, he manipulated the Samadhi True Fire.
Under his control, the flames continued to swell.
The spiritual energy flowing within the pill cauldron grew increasingly dense.
The Golden Crow heart within Xu Zhong’s chest became fuller and fuller, gradually turning pure and flawless.
But the fuller it became, the closer it was to reaching its limit.
At that moment, Xu Zhong slapped his palm against his hand and laughed aloud.
“I’ve got it!”
