Chapter 14: Consecutive Drops
During the noon break, Lin Yi finished handling matters at the studio and logged in once again.
Just as in the morning, Lin Yi cautiously approached the city wall guarded by the Militia Second Squad.
However, as soon as he arrived, a strong scent of blood filled the air.
Voices came from the watchtower.
“Hey, Captain, be gentle with the bandages...”
“Don’t whine. The Wolfclaw is poisonous. If you don’t clean the poison properly, don’t blame me if something happens later...”
Climbing up the wall, Lin Yi saw Gu Xiaoliu and two other team members writhing in pain with abdominal wounds, while Captain Gu Chenghu was treating them with a green herbal liquid.
There were scattered bloodstains on the ground.
“Captain, what happened?”
Gu Chenghu glanced at Lin Yi and said, “These guys were ambushed by the two Bloodthirsty Wolves this morning. Luckily, I arrived in time—no fatalities.”
Bandaged Gu Xiaoliu gritted his teeth and cursed, “Damn it, those two beasts were too clever today. They silently crept along the wall while we were eating lunch up here...”
Gu Chenghu scolded, “No excuses. You’re seasoned members, yet you let those beasts fool you? You’re asking for death. I warned you the Bloodthirsty Wolves wouldn’t stray far, and you still made such a big mistake. You’re worse than rookies...”
The injured men dared not utter a word.
Gu Chenghu wiped the blood from his hands and approached Lin Yi. “Qingshan, you’ve come at the right time. Those two Bloodthirsty Wolves saw blood this morning and probably can’t hold back. They might sneak into the village this afternoon or evening. I plan to take action immediately.”
Lin Yi nodded. “Understood, Captain. I’ll do as you say.”
Gu Chenghu patted Lin Yi’s shoulder with satisfaction. “Haha, good, you have courage. Don’t worry, you won’t have to face the Bloodthirsty Wolves upfront. Just help me finish off those two beasts at the end.”
“Captain, rest assured. I have experience. Before, Captain Gu Man...”
“You killed a demon beast, right? I’ve heard about it. Honestly, if you hadn’t been able to kill a demon beast at level one, even if Brother Yongqiang recommended you, I wouldn’t have let you join our team...” Gu Chenghu didn’t say more.
He then called out a few Second Squad members to fetch some items from the village, then led Lin Yi out of the city walls to the wilderness beyond Gutang Village.
The wilderness was bleak and silent, the wind howling mournfully.
Around them were sparse patches of grass and scattered animal corpses stained with blood and flesh tones.
It was Lin Yi’s first time leaving Gutang Village, and he felt an intense sense of insecurity, as if something was watching him.
Seeing this, Gu Chenghu smiled. “Don’t worry. I cleared this area recently. There’s no danger during the day.”
After walking about five hundred meters, until the city walls disappeared behind a rise, Gu Chenghu stopped.
Ahead lay a sunken wetland, the ground hollowed out and piled with numerous animal carcasses, flies buzzing wildly.
Because it was midday and hot, Lin Yi inhaled lightly and immediately felt a strong, rotten stench penetrate deep into his lungs, lingering for a long while.
Damn, it stinks terribly!
Gu Chenghu surveyed the area and explained, “This is a perfect spot. The terrain is low, and there’s a mud pit. If we can lure the Bloodthirsty Wolves here, we can ambush them from all sides and make sure they don’t escape.”
Lin Yi asked, puzzled, “Captain, the Bloodthirsty Wolves are clever and nearly as intelligent as humans. It won’t be easy to lure them here, right?”
“I plan to use something they can’t resist, but it’s risky...”
At that moment, Gu Shan, who had just returned to the village, arrived breathlessly carrying a tightly wrapped package in oiled paper.
“Captain, I got it. Old Gu Yuan in the township told me to be careful and gave me a talisman just in case. He said to deduct contribution points from you for it.”
“That old coot...” Gu Chenghu cursed under his breath, then took the two items from Gu Shan.
One was a talisman glowing faintly with a blood-red hue, evidently valuable—far superior to the “Swift Talisman” Lin Yi had exchanged yesterday.
The other, wrapped tightly in oiled paper, when unwrapped, revealed a writhing mass of flesh and blood.
Lin Yi leaned closer, eyes narrowing. Was this blood bait?
Honestly, the sight was somewhat disgusting, as if it had been cut from some living creature.
Blood bait was precious not only to humans but also highly sought after by monsters.
Lin Yi knew that blood bait could be exchanged using contribution points; one gram required two points—very expensive.
The piece Gu Chenghu held weighed about six taels, roughly needing 600 contribution points to exchange.
No doubt, Gu Chenghu had invested heavily to lure the Bloodthirsty Wolves.
He then descended into the pit and mud with the blood bait and started setting a meticulous trap.
Lin Yi was taken by Gu Shan and other squad members to a nearby pile of rocks.
Underneath, a hollow had been dug to hide several people.
Gu Shan handed Lin Yi a bottle of potion. “Use this to eliminate the water’s odor first. We can’t let the Bloodthirsty Wolves catch wind of it.”
“What about the captain?”
“Don’t worry about him. The blood bait is too precious. The captain has to stay down there to guard it; otherwise, the local animals might eat it, and all our efforts would be wasted.”
“But if the captain is down there, will the Bloodthirsty Wolves still fall for the trap?”
“You don’t know? Our captain has a breath-holding technique. When activated, he emits no scent, like a corpse. Wrapped in mud, the Bloodthirsty Wolves can’t detect anything.”
Lin Yi kept asking questions, and Gu Shan patiently answered each.
The rock cave entrance was sealed by Gu Shan, leaving only a small air hole.
Time passed slowly, more than half an hour.
Suddenly, a fierce shout came from outside.
“How bold! They really showed up! Gu Shan, you all hurry out and help!”
Gu Shan and four militia members charged out, leaving a level seven member named Gu He to protect Lin Yi.
Sounds of a fierce battle echoed from outside. Lin Yi tried to peek but was pulled back by Gu He.
“Qingshan, you’re only level one. If the Bloodthirsty Wolves target you, I can’t protect you. For safety, wait for the signal before coming out.”
Lin Yi thought it wise and, clutching his only life-saving “Swift Talisman,” crouched at the cave entrance, waiting patiently.
In the low muddy pit outside, Gu Chenghu wielded a mysterious black long knife, fighting fiercely against the two Bloodthirsty Wolves.
These two were level nine monsters, highly intelligent and cooperative.
Seeing Gu Chenghu emerge from the mud and seize the blood bait, they realized they were ambushed and launched a full assault to kill him quickly and reclaim the bait.
“Roar!”
“Die!”
Gu Chenghu’s blade flashed fiercely. His black long knife shimmered with a fiery red glow, as if it could cut flames.
Despite the two level nine Bloodthirsty Wolves attacking with all their might, he barely managed to hold them off.
“Captain, we’re here!” Gu Shan and the others appeared, easing Gu Chenghu’s pressure.
“You guys handle one; I’ll kill the other first...”
Seeing the situation worsen, the two Bloodthirsty Wolves howled and tried to escape.
But Gu Chenghu had chosen a treacherous spot where the soil was sandy, the terrain sunken, and the bottom filled with foul mud and water.
The wolves scrambled desperately, their claws slipping multiple times, even sinking into the mire.
“I’ve endured this stench for so long to lure you here; how dare you try to run!” Gu Chenghu sneered, intensifying his attacks, aiming specifically at one wolf’s vulnerable abdomen.
Less than two minutes later, Lin Yi, hidden in the cave, heard Gu Chenghu’s call.
“Qingshan, come out and help!”
Lin Yi quickly scrambled out to see Gu Shan and others struggling with a wolf trapped in the mud.
Nearby, Gu Chenghu stood over the other fallen Bloodthirsty Wolf, his blood-dripping long knife in hand.
Without delay, Lin Yi slid down the sandy slope toward Gu Chenghu.
“Take the knife. Aim for the wolf’s neck!”
Lin Yi nodded and took the blood-stained black long knife.
Suddenly, his arms felt a heavy weight—the knife was even heavier than Captain Gu Man’s Qingfeng sword.
[Dragon’s Roar Blade · Spirit Tool]: A legendary weapon passed down in Gutang Village for centuries, unmatched in sharpness. Power +10. When tempered with dragon’s blood, the blade becomes tougher and its power doubles.
Lin Yi glanced at the blade’s stats, then raised it with both hands and struck fiercely.
Squick!
The wolf beneath already bore numerous cuts from Gu Chenghu’s blade, and its abdomen was severely wounded, barely alive.
Lin Yi struck one of the cuts with full force, instantly killing the wolf, sending a spray of blood a meter high.
“Ding! You have slain a level nine Bloodthirsty Wolf and gained 70 experience points!”
The wolf’s body transformed into light and vanished, leaving behind two items.
[Bloodthirsty Wolf Heart · Green]: A rare material rich in vital energy. Consuming it likely boosts physical attributes but carries a small risk of monster transformation.
[Low-level Demon Blood · White]: Dropped by low-level demon beasts, containing chaotic and irritable demonic energy, widely useful.
“Two drops. Good luck,” Gu Chenghu said, picking up the items with a slightly pleased expression, then handed them to Lin Yi and charged toward the remaining wolf with his Dragon’s Roar Blade.
The last Bloodthirsty Wolf, seeing its companion brutally slain, gave up on fleeing and launched a frenzied assault on Gu Shan and the others.
Gu Chenghu arrived just in time to see the wolf knock several people aside and viciously bite a level seven militia member to the ground.
“Beast! How dare you attack in front of me!” Gu Chenghu roared in fury. His blood surged, and the Dragon’s Roar Blade trembled, emitting a sound like a dragon’s roar.
“Flaming Sun Blade Technique!”
A three-meter-long fiery red blade energy burst forth, slashing savagely across the wolf’s blue furred back.
Howl!
The wolf was slammed several meters away, flesh and blood scattering through the air.
“Qingshan, hurry!” Gu Chenghu urged after subduing the last wolf.
Still captivated by Gu Chenghu’s blade technique, Lin Yi rushed over.
Taking the Dragon’s Roar Blade, he took a deep breath and struck down hard again.
“Ding! You have slain a level nine Bloodthirsty Wolf and gained 70 experience points!”
Two more items dropped.
[Bloodthirsty Wolf Codex · White]: A record of the Bloodthirsty Wolf’s species, habits, and weaknesses. Exclusive tool for the born, allowing permanent viewing of the wolf’s status, vitality, and attributes.
[Demon Beast Leg Bone · White]: A leg bone dropped by a low-level demon beast, used for forging weapons, grinding into powder, or other purposes.
