Chapter Twenty-Seven: Guerrilla Warfare
“Damn, did I stir up a hornet’s nest? There’s even a queen bee who’s cultivated demonic power—this is trouble.”
Xiao Wenzi was speechless. He didn't know that the queen bee had long coveted the spiritual flowers here, restrained only by the tyranny of the venomous python.
Yet he was loath to relinquish such a pleasant place for cultivation. As soon as he flew out from the flower bud, Xiao Wenzi, without hesitation, charged toward the largest bee, his wing blades whirling, striking relentlessly at its vital spots.
Catch the leader first to subdue the others—Xiao Wenzi’s strategy was sound, but his opponent was no fool.
Seeing Xiao Wenzi’s ferocity, the massive queen bee darted and dodged while issuing commands to her followers. The swarm buzzed incessantly, surging forward, eager to assail Xiao Wenzi.
Slice—slice—
His wing blades slashed through several bees, severing their bodies, some hanging by a thread of skin, crying as they plummeted to the ground.
Though he could kill enemies in one blow, the deaths of a few meant nothing against the teeming masses of the hive. The queen bee, having evaded his attack, now hid at the swarm’s center, unreachable for the moment.
“Damn it, the queen’s demonic power is weak and she probably has no offensive skills like my wing blade technique. If it were one-on-one, I’d easily kill her, but now there’s no chance.”
Xiao Wenzi’s pupils contracted. He knew his body lacked resilience and he couldn’t let the bees get close enough to bite; all he could do was retreat and evade.
He wasn’t cowardly—the bees were simply too numerous. If each one bit him, he’d be torn to shreds.
He’d only recently broken through to the mid-stage of the second layer of the Demonic Qi Realm. Even if he exhausted his demonic spirit power, he could unleash his wing blades a few dozen times at most, nowhere near enough to slaughter the entire swarm.
Moreover, the common bees obeyed the queen without question. If his cultivation ran dry and he was trapped by these fearless creatures, he risked dying again and losing another portion of his Red Heart.
A wise man doesn’t suffer immediate losses. The only option was to withdraw to safety and devise a counterattack.
Seeing him flee, the previously wounded queen bee issued a command. Instantly, a hundred bees detached from the swarm to pursue him, while she, protected by the others, flew toward the stamen of the Cloud-Loving Flower.
“You’ve got to be kidding me—these guys are pushing their luck.”
The wings of a mosquito are tiny, much smaller than a bee’s. Without activating his demonic spirit power, Xiao Wenzi’s flight speed was no match for theirs.
After fleeing over a hundred meters and noticing the swarm still doggedly chasing, Xiao Wenzi’s fury and murderous intent soared to unprecedented heights.
He still had nearly two thousand ordinary system coins, enough to exchange for over sixty drops of Demonic Spirit Dew, enabling him to instantly restore his cultivation sixty times. If he could cleverly find a chance to shake off the pursuers and replenish his strength, it wasn’t impossible to wipe out these annoying bees.
The only worry was whether the queen would join the remaining bees to aid the chase, since even with Demonic Spirit Dew, he needed time to consume it.
Thus, Xiao Wenzi activated his demonic spirit power, poured it into his wings, and flew another few dozen meters before stopping to exchange for a drop of Demonic Spirit Dew. He swallowed it, channeled his cultivation, and waited for his enemies to approach.
A hundred meters was nothing for bees that daily flew dozens of miles gathering nectar. Driven by the queen’s command, the swarm buzzed fiercely, charging at Xiao Wenzi without hesitation.
Enough was enough. Since they sought death, he would not be lenient.
As they drew near, Xiao Wenzi rapidly flapped his wings, sending out translucent blades locked onto their heads by his Spiritual Eye Technique, slicing mercilessly.
Slice—slice—slice—
Xiao Wenzi didn’t wish to waste his demonic spirit power; each wing blade targeted only one bee. Amidst the slicing sounds, four or five bees were cut in half, their wings still fluttering as they fell onto the dry leaves below.
Yet the remaining bees showed no fear, continuing their assault, their venomous stingers vibrating rapidly.
“Stubborn fools.”
Xiao Wenzi sneered inwardly. As he dodged their attacks, he unleashed wing blade after wing blade, slaughtering his enemies.
Once his demonic spirit power was nearly depleted, he swiftly flew off some distance, found a smooth leaf, and paused to exchange another drop of Demonic Spirit Dew.
After a brief delay, the surviving bees, now filled with hatred for him due to their comrades’ gruesome deaths, quickly rushed over again.
Demonic Spirit Dew could instantly replenish the consumption of early-stage Demonic Qi Realm. Until he reached the peak of the fourth layer, it remained his best tool for survival and combat.
With a drop of Demonic Spirit Dew in his belly, his dry cultivation was swiftly restored. Xiao Wenzi chuckled coldly, then spread his wings to face the swarm once more.
Thus, the sound of slicing wings echoed through the woods, bee after bee shattered—some their heads crushed, others their abdomens split in two. Amber blood sprayed as severed wings and limbs danced in the wind.
After once more replenishing his cultivation with Demonic Spirit Dew, all hundred pursuers lay dead.
Having annihilated his enemies, Xiao Wenzi did not leave or return to the Cloud-Loving Flower, but instead flew to a nearby treetop, using his Blood Spirit Grand Method to rapidly restore his cultivation.
He had already decided: since a frontal assault on the queen bee under the swarm’s protection was difficult, he would fight a guerrilla war to divide and conquer.
He couldn’t believe that after luring away and exterminating all her followers, the not-yet-fully-grown queen bee would dare challenge him.
Time slipped by like a white steed crossing a gap. By nightfall, Xiao Wenzi had recovered to peak condition, and as the Blood Spirit Grand Method absorbed energy, the floral scent on him faded considerably. He slowly flew toward the area where the Cloud-Loving Flowers grew.
The forest at night was gloomy, punctuated only by the distant roars of beasts and the low chirping of insects—no other sounds disturbed the silence.
Perhaps because their companions had not returned, the bees gathered here were particularly vigilant. They formed a circle, encasing the Cloud-Loving Flowers, but the queen bee was nowhere in sight.
Suddenly, swift slicing sounds pierced the air. Several bees at the perimeter were instantly cut apart, their bodies falling to the ground.
Buzz—
Seeing their companions die before them, the swarm erupted, buzzing furiously as they charged at the little mosquito who had revealed himself.
Intent on picking them off one by one, Xiao Wenzi unleashed several wing blade techniques, dispatched his foes, then turned and flew off into the distance.
The bees’ vision suffered greatly at night, nowhere near as effective as the mosquito’s infrared sensing. After fleeing for a while, Xiao Wenzi realized his pursuers had vanished.
“Damn, how could I forget that bees are blind at night? Without the scent of the Cloud-Loving Flowers to guide them, they can’t possibly track me. There’s no need to make things so complicated when dealing with these creatures.”
Xiao Wenzi recalled a bit of information he’d seen online in his previous life: bees, like ants, can only see vaguely during the day, and rely primarily on scent to navigate.
Understanding this, he felt reassured and flapped his wings, retracing his path.
Sure enough, the bees, having been stirred up, had regrouped around the Cloud-Loving Flowers, though their mood was more agitated than before.
Xiao Wenzi approached slowly, waited for an opportune moment, then unleashed his wing blade technique. Five or six bees fell dead in an instant.
