Volume One, Chapter 106: Xiao Jin’s Lingering Worry Finally Dies
Xiao Jin was a little angry. "How can you say that about her?"
Xiao Rui defended himself confidently, "I'm not wrong. You’re not in the group chat, so of course you don’t know."
The group Xiao Rui referred to was the second-generation brothers’ chat—filled with men of similar status, like Chen Qifan and others, chatting amongst themselves.
Xiao Jin paused for a moment, then said, "Isn't there a big group? Why do you have a separate smaller group?"
"What do you mean small or big? Don’t you girls have your own private groups?"
Xiao Jin thought about it and realized they did, but she hadn’t joined because she wasn’t close with the group’s admin and felt there wouldn’t be much to talk about.
"What exactly did you guys say in that brothers’ group? Tell me."
Xiao Rui thought for a moment, then snorted heavily.
The matter was simple. One day, a brother in the group posted a picture on his social feed—a glass of red wine next to a girl.
The girl’s face wasn’t shown, only a hand, but that alone, combined with the dim lighting, clearly suggested the brother was on a date.
At first, it seemed like a trivial thing, but then another brother in the group spoke up.
This second brother recognized the bracelet on the girl’s wrist—it was a custom-made gemstone bracelet he had personally designed and commissioned from a luxury brand.
The two brothers compared notes and confirmed it was the same girl: Chi Yueyao.
The group chat opened up, with others chiming in that they, too, had connections with Chi Yueyao. There was nothing left unclear.
These wealthy sons might love beautiful women, but they were not willing to be toyed with like fools.
"You see, she’s going on a date with someone new every day. Isn’t she just fishing for sugar daddies? Now that our second brother is sober, he’s the biggest sugar daddy in her eyes. She treats you like a tool, and you’re still foolishly trying to play matchmaker for her. If I were Sister Xing Wan, I’d slap you silly."
Xiao Rui’s unreserved mockery made Xiao Jin angry, but she had to admit, he wasn’t entirely wrong.
Chi Yueyao’s behavior did look like she was fishing for rich men.
Xiao Jin’s mind was in turmoil. She stumbled back to her room, collapsed onto her bed, and buried her head in the pillow.
The Chi Yueyao she remembered was nothing like this—she was supposed to be an ethereal fairy, gentle, kind, and self-reliant, a big sister figure.
How could it have turned out this way?
---
The phone rang. Xiao Jin picked it up and saw it was Chi Yueyao calling.
She recalled what Xiao Rui had said earlier.
"If you still don’t believe it, set a trap and see if she falls for it."
After a moment’s hesitation, she answered.
On the other end, hearing Xiao Jin’s voice, Chi Yueyao was pleased. "Xiao Jin, have you been busy lately?"
Xiao Jin answered quietly, "Yeah, pretty busy."
Chi Yueyao noticed something was off but dismissed it, assuming she was just tired.
"Xiao Jin, we haven’t seen each other for a long time. I recently had some perfumes brought back from abroad by a friend. One of the scents I think suits you perfectly."
Xiao Jin replied, "Sister Yueyao, you don’t have to consider me for everything."
Chi Yueyao laughed, "What are you talking about? I treat you like my little sister, it’s only natural as your elder sister to care about you."
Xiao Jin was touched by these words. She thought, yes, she had known Chi Yueyao since childhood. Chi Yueyao must have been sincere. How could she ever treat her like a tool?
Guilt welled up inside her. She had actually believed Xiao Rui’s nonsense and doubted Sister Yueyao.
"Sister Yueyao? Are you there?" Chi Yueyao asked.
Snapping back to reality, Xiao Jin said, "I’m fine. I was just thinking—it’s been a while since we met. How about we get together sometime? Maybe at a café near school?"
Chi Yueyao smiled and said, "Of course, we should meet up. But I don’t think we need to meet outside. Why don’t I come to your place instead?"
Xiao Jin’s heart skipped a beat. "There’s nothing interesting at my place. Let’s meet outside."
But Chi Yueyao insisted on visiting Xiao’s home, "Xiao Jin, I haven’t visited your family in a long time. Since New Year’s is coming, I want to pay them an early visit."
Xiao Jin’s heart sank. Chi Yueyao had never previously come to greet her family.
She wanted to ask if the insistence had anything to do with Second Brother, but in the end, she didn’t.
"Sister Yueyao, sorry, maybe it won’t be possible recently. Tomorrow I have to accompany Second Brother to the nursing home."
Chi Yueyao was surprised, "A nursing home? Do you have a relative living there?"
---
"No, it’s a retired employee. This is a benefit from our family’s group. The employee is having a birthday, so the group is sending him birthday gifts."
Chi Yueyao pondered briefly, then smiled, "I see. Which nursing home are you going to? What time?"
Xiao Jin replied quietly, "Fushan Nursing Home, at three in the afternoon."
After hanging up, Xiao Jin hurried to Xiao Rui’s room. "Hey, I told Sister Yueyao that tomorrow I’ll accompany Second Brother to the nursing home, just like you said."
Xiao Rui was about to scold her for barging in without knocking, but upon hearing this, his interest piqued immediately.
"Tomorrow we’ll find out what Sister Yueyao’s real intentions are. That nursing home’s out in the suburbs, miles away from the city. Tomorrow we’ll stake it out. If Chi Yueyao shows up, it means she’s after Second Brother."
The next day, Xiao Rui and Xiao Jin arrived early at the nursing home, which the Xiao family had long supported, so they got in easily and went to the second floor.
From the window, they had a perfect view of the nursing home’s entrance.
Xiao Jin watched nervously, praying Chi Yueyao wouldn’t show up.
Xiao Rui sat across from her, casually sipping tea. "Want to bet? I bet she’ll show up, and dressed to the nines."
Xiao Jin pressed her lips shut, secretly feeling that if she bet, Xiao Rui would definitely win.
Time ticked by, and it was already two o’clock. Xiao Jin glanced toward the entrance, and when she spotted the slender figure, her heart plummeted.
"See? I told you she’d show up, and dressed to the nines."
In the dead of winter, Chi Yueyao wore a short skirt and knee-high boots, exposing a portion of her thighs, which looked freezing. The only thing keeping her warm was a long trench coat, but she hadn’t zipped it up—she simply draped it over her shoulders, clearly so as not to hide her snow-white long legs.
She paced back and forth outside the nursing home entrance several times. At half past two, she slipped into a narrow alley beside the nursing home.
The alley was too narrow for cars to pass, and from its mouth, one could clearly see the nursing home’s entrance.
Xiao Jin observed every move. What else was there to wonder?
