Volume One, Chapter 91: The Xing Family's Attitude
Mother Xing tried to persuade him, “A-Liang, they’re Mingyue’s friends. They won’t harm Lele.”
But Xing Liang’s face was still full of anger. He ignored Mother Xing and turned instead to Father Xing, who had followed behind.
“Dad, Mom’s being foolish, but you can’t follow her lead. These people are clearly swindlers, who knows what they’re up to. If you ask me, they might even be human traffickers, specializing in selling young girls to remote mountain areas.”
Father Xing frowned, an awkward look on his face. “A-Liang, that’s going a bit too far.”
Chu Fangfei was furious as well. She took her student ID from her small backpack, her voice brimming with indignation. “We’re students of Yanjing University. You know nothing about us and yet you make baseless assumptions. That’s incredibly rude!”
Xu Mingyue’s face was equally angry. Late Xingwan and her companions were her friends, brought here by her, so what did Xing Liang’s words mean?
Mother Xing, seeing everyone at an impasse, anxiously turned to Father Xing. “Old man, I want to cure Lele. Just now, Lele recovered—even if it was only for a few seconds, I’m sure she was lucid.”
Father Xing stepped forward and looked at Xing Le.
Xing Le still sat blankly on the bed. Despite the crowd in the room, she made no movement at all.
“Wife, can Lele really recover?” Father Xing asked, his voice low, betraying a hint of unease.
Mother Xing was silent for a moment before she spoke. “I don’t know if Lele can get better, but I do know this is an opportunity. I… Old man, I truly don’t want to send Lele to a mental hospital.”
Overcome with sorrow, she could not help but sob softly.
Father Xing glanced at Xing Le again, then finally said, “One last time. We’ll try one last time. If it doesn’t work, then… then we’ll stick to the original plan and send her away.”
Xu Mingyue breathed a sigh of relief, but Xing Liang was furious.
He kicked over a stool in rage and cursed, “Are you two senile? You spent all that money hiring experts who couldn’t solve anything, and now you believe a bunch of kids can fix it?”
“A-Liang…”
“If you two keep being so stubborn, don’t blame me for being heartless. I won’t look after you in your old age.”
Everyone present was stunned by Xing Liang’s words.
Jin Feng, another man in the room, looked at Xing Liang with utter disdain. “Hey, do you even know what you’re saying? Those are your parents, the ones who raised you. How can you speak to them like that?”
Xing Liang shot Jin Feng a cold glance. “Who are you? This is my family, my parents. How I speak to them is none of your business.”
“You…” Jin Feng was about to explode, but Late Xingwan stopped him with a hand, quelling his anger instantly.
“Are you really just worried we’re traffickers?” Late Xingwan asked.
Xing Liang clicked his tongue. “I don’t care who you are. Get out of my house now.”
Ignoring him, Late Xingwan continued, “Actually, you’re not worried about us being traffickers at all. On the contrary, you wish we were. You’d love for us to take Xing Le forever, wouldn’t you?”
Everyone was stunned, at a loss for words.
Xing Liang grew flustered and shouted, “What do you mean by that? You’re slandering me!”
“You know in your heart whether I’m slandering you. You honestly don’t want Xing Le to recover,” Late Xingwan said again.
Xing Liang’s panic deepened. Father Xing and Mother Xing were skeptical at first, but knowing their son, they felt a pang in their hearts as they saw his expression.
“A-Liang, why? Why don’t you want your sister to get better?” Mother Xing asked, her voice trembling.
Xing Liang shouted guiltily, “Mom, you believe an outsider’s nonsense? You doubt me because of her?”
“I… I…” Mother Xing struggled internally.
Late Xingwan stepped forward. “You’d rather Xing Le disappeared, but you don’t have the courage to kill. So you once plotted for her to be taken by traffickers?”
“That’s nonsense!” Xing Liang’s face turned pale, his lips trembling.
Late Xingwan smiled slightly. “I was bluffing, but from your reaction, it seems I was right.”
Father Xing and Mother Xing were frozen, both recalling that in the past, there had been several close calls where Xing Le almost got kidnapped—luckily, they’d been vigilant. Otherwise…
“A-Liang, was it really you behind those incidents? Why would you do that? She’s your sister!” Father Xing roared in anger.
Still, Xing Liang refused to admit it. “I didn’t do it. How could you believe an outsider over your own son?”
Mother Xing rushed to embrace Xing Le, sobbing bitterly. “A-Liang, precisely because you’re our own son, we know all too well how you feel about your sister. Ever since she fell ill, your patience for her has worn thin, but I never imagined you’d want her gone.”
“You’re all fooled. Why would I want traffickers to take her? Even if she stays, it doesn’t affect me—I’m not the one taking care of her…”
“Does it really not affect you?” Late Xingwan asked, her tone cold.
“If it doesn’t, why are you so insistent on sending Xing Le to a mental hospital instead of letting her receive treatment?”
Xing Liang’s face was ashen, glaring viciously at Late Xingwan.
Jin Feng stepped forward, standing protectively beside Late Xingwan, ready to shield her at a moment’s notice.
“It’s such a simple question. Why? Because of money?”
Money? Chu Fangfei and the others were confused, but Father Xing and Mother Xing immediately understood. They looked at Xing Liang in disbelief.
Late Xingwan said, “You want to inherit all your parents’ assets. Every cent they spend on Xing Le pains and infuriates you, doesn’t it?”
“You… you’re slandering me…” Xing Liang could only offer feeble rebuttal.
But no one believed him.
“At first, you tried to sell Xing Le, but failed. Later, you were relieved it didn’t work, because you realized that if Xing Le vanished, your parents would stop at nothing to find her. Then you persuaded them to agree to send her to a mental hospital.”
“Because that way, it’s just a yearly fee paid to the hospital. But if Xing Le recovers, the expenses won’t stop there.”
Late Xingwan gazed calmly at Xing Liang.
“A person just emerging from a state of confusion and idiocy, with neither education nor qualifications—if Xing Le wakes up, your parents will invest even more to help her live a good life. That’s what you’re thinking, isn’t it?”
Xing Liang stood frozen, his thoughts laid bare. In his shock, he forgot to argue.
Everyone present saw his reaction, and it spoke for itself.
