Chapter 2: She Awoke Three Days After Her Death
The man's voice was deep and steady, cool and indifferent as he spoke with the person on the other end of the line. Chi Yu, held in his hand, could hear their conversation clearly—they were discussing business matters. Apparently, a project the man wanted had been won by another company in a bidding war.
It wasn't that Chi Yu was deliberately eavesdropping; rather, now that she was living inside the man's phone, it was impossible to block out the conversation even if she wanted to.
The moment he picked up his phone and the screen unlocked with facial recognition, a massive influx of information crashed over Chi Yu like a reservoir releasing its floodwaters.
When Chi Yu first crossed over, she was merely a small, weak strand of data, trapped on the phone's lock screen, unable to move.
Now, after automatically merging with the phone’s other data, she knew more about its private contents than the man himself.
She even knew about his secret stash of money—wait, how many zeroes was that? Ten, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, a million, ten million, a hundred million, a billion, ten billion, a hundred billion?!
This man was outrageously wealthy!
Even in death, she couldn't resist her love for money; Chi Yu almost couldn't help herself as golden coins sparkled in her eyes.
Though she knew it was nothing but a string of virtual data, she couldn't resist rubbing up against that dazzling, shining treasure.
Chi Yu happily nuzzled close to the wealth.
After the man picked up the phone, Chi Yu realized her vision had changed.
Now that she was the phone itself, the front and rear cameras were equivalent to her eyes.
Previously, all she could see was the ceiling and the phone’s owner; when the phone was left on the desk, the rear camera was covered, so she could only observe the outside world through the front camera—like taking a selfie.
Now that the man was holding the phone, she could secretly peek through the rear camera.
Though her field of vision couldn't rotate and she could only see what was directly ahead, Chi Yu still gathered a lot of information.
She was indeed in an office, inside a high-rise building.
Through the bright floor-to-ceiling windows, she could clearly see other towering, bustling commercial buildings outside.
The architectural styles of these skyscrapers were all extremely familiar to her, almost indistinguishable from the world she had lived in before her death!
Chi Yu's heart skipped a beat. She even ignored the man on the phone, her gaze fixed on the distant buildings, her vision sharpening until she spotted a particularly familiar penguin logo on one of them.
It was the Penguin Corporation!
What did this mean? She might still exist in this world!
Lost in shock, Chi Yu didn't realize that the building with the penguin logo was several kilometers away from her current position. With normal eyesight, it would have been impossible to see it so clearly, yet she could make out every detail.
After finishing his call, Shen Yanzhi noticed that his phone had somehow switched to camera mode, zoomed in several times.
He thought nothing of it, assuming he’d accidentally tapped it while on the call, and calmly exited the app.
Chi Yu’s vision abruptly went dark, and only then did she realize she’d somehow activated the camera.
She wasn't sure what form she presented to him at that moment.
Looking at the man so close before her, Chi Yu felt a little nervous. She hid quietly behind a small icon, afraid of being discovered.
However, the man seemed not to notice anything unusual about his phone. After closing the camera, he set the phone back down on the desk and returned to his work.
Chi Yu waited quietly until the screen automatically locked and that familiar sense of confinement returned.
Now she understood: she was trapped in the screensaver again.
She tried to unlock the phone herself but found she couldn't bypass the password.
Back in darkness, perhaps because she understood her situation better now, the initial panic and anxiety faded away.
The glimpse of that penguin logo had filled Chi Yu with hope.
She had just absorbed a wealth of information, including the current date and time—it was exactly the same as when she’d been alive, with only a minor discrepancy in the days.
The present date was only three days after her drowning. She had gone to the sea with Chen Jia on the third, and now it was the sixth.
Chi Yu wasn't sure whether this was a parallel world or if she had been resurrected three days after she drowned.
She hoped it was the latter.
She sprawled inside the phone to rest, occasionally peeking at the man through the front camera.
He was strikingly handsome, cool and elegant—such an extraordinary figure, Chi Yu was sure she had never met him before.
She had no idea what had caused her to transmigrate into this man’s phone.
And the man himself seemed completely unaware.
Chi Yu quietly vowed that until she figured everything out, she would hide herself well and never let anyone know she existed—not even this phone’s owner.
After all, she’d never heard of dissecting phone data before, but just in case…
Having died once, Chi Yu cherished her life all the more.
The man seemed especially busy.
During his work, several groups of subordinates came in and out of the office—some to report, others to have documents signed.
“President Shen, here’s the project plan for the Southern City development…”
“President Shen, this document needs your signature for confirmation…”
Chi Yu rolled over in the screensaver.
So he was a president—that explained the wealth.
Shen Yanzhi remained busy until noon.
His phone vibrated several times; people sent him messages on WeChat, but he didn’t check them.
The message previews were hidden, so Chi Yu could only see notifications but not the actual content.
Finally, when the man finished the last document and capped his pen, Chi Yu immediately perked up.
But instead of leaving, the man simply lifted his gaze, picked up the landline, and called his assistant. “Assistant Chen, come to my office and bring the bidding proposal for the Huai City project.”
Chi Yu: …
Half a minute later, Assistant Chen entered. “President Shen.”
He placed a file in front of Shen Yanzhi.
Shen Yanzhi flipped through the document, and after seeing the amount, closed it and spoke calmly: “Qin Nan just called. During the Huai City bid, the other side beat us by only ten thousand yuan.”
That Huai City project was something Shen Yanzhi had learned about early and had been preparing for.
Huai City’s eastern district had been designated as a development zone by the government, but since it hadn’t been officially announced, very few people knew.
Once they discovered a parcel of land there was up for bid, Shen Yanzhi’s team spent half a month researching and revising the proposal until he was satisfied. Qin Nan led the team to participate in the bidding.
Shen Yanzhi had already investigated the competitors and was confident about the project.
Yet just now, Qin Nan had called to say they’d lost.
Qin Nan’s words were: “Su Sheng Group showed up too—Second Young Master Su himself, who never gets involved in business, was there in person. Their bid was only ten thousand higher than ours.”
Qin Nan was practically spitting blood.
This was a blind bid, with only one chance.
Whoever offered the highest price would win the development rights to the land.
It was a parcel worth over a hundred million, and they lost by just ten thousand?
Qin Nan had been in the business for years and had lost before, but never so frustratingly.
For a project worth hundreds of millions, a difference of several million or even a hundred thousand would be normal.
In previous bids, whether winning or losing, the difference was almost always within that range.
But ten thousand?
That was likely due to a mole within the company—someone had leaked the bid.
That was also why Shen Yanzhi had summoned Assistant Chen.
Shen Yanzhi said, “Look into this.”
As Assistant Chen was leaving, the phone lying on Shen Yanzhi’s desk began to ring.
