Chapter Twenty-Seven: Almost Pushed Off!
Afterward, the director of the show made a sudden suggestion. He proposed adding an exciting and challenging bonus activity at the end of the second episode. The director’s mind worked in mysterious ways. “How about this,” he said, “after the game ends, we’ll reward one team by letting them go paragliding! We’ll draw lots to decide!”
Paragliding?!
That activity was hardly friendly to those with a fear of heights!
Was this really a reward or more of a punishment?
Chen Chen remembered something and quickly asked Fang Zhiyin, “Zhiyin, I recall you’re afraid of heights, aren’t you?”
“I’m okay…” In truth, it was quite severe, but with so many people around, Fang Zhiyin didn’t dare admit it. Besides, there was no guarantee they’d be the ones to draw the paragliding lot.
Soon after, the director announced the start of the episode’s recording.
The initial mountain climbing segment was truly dull. Five teams, ten people in all, searched for items as they climbed, but the director hadn’t set up any other interesting activities, so it was rather boring.
Halfway up, Ouyang Qingqing simply couldn’t go any further and told the director she needed a break. She shouted and fussed like a little girl, which actually became the most entertaining part of the show.
“Director, I’m only resting because I’m not feeling well—it’s that time of the month!” Ouyang Qingqing declared righteously. “I’m not taking part in that punishment at the end.”
“Alright, alright!” The director was quick to comply. “You can go down and rest with the staff for a while.”
Seeing the director let Ouyang Qingqing off so easily, Fang Zhiyin could only shake her head in disbelief.
Fang Zhiyin and Chen Chen kept climbing, but since the show was so poorly designed and the director hadn’t even said what the reward for finding the treasure was, they ended up chatting idly as they made their way up.
Aside from Ouyang Qingqing, who had announced her “surrender,” the rest eventually dragged themselves to the summit, exhausted. This time, a male contestant found the “treasure” and became the episode’s winner.
After this segment, the director announced with glee, “Wait! Our game isn’t over yet! Aren’t you all curious about the next round? Alright! We’re moving on to the next activity—paragliding!”
…Director, the one most eager to go bungee jumping here seems to be you, doesn’t it?
Watching the director’s excitement, Fang Zhiyin thought with resignation.
Ten minutes later, the director arrived with a box for drawing lots. The contestants, still catching their breath, each reached into the box for a ball. Only two balls were orange; the rest were black.
If you drew an orange ball, you had to go paragliding.
Fang Zhiyin had intended to go first, but on second thought decided to wait until the end… Who could have known that aside from Chen Chen, who eagerly reached in first and drew an orange ball, everyone else drew black balls.
Fang Zhiyin could hardly believe it—so in the end, the other “lucky one” was her after all?
“It’s your turn!” someone called out, and Fang Zhiyin wore a look of utter despair.
“Director, I’m going to file a complaint about you when I get back!” she said, glaring at the director, who was trying to stifle his laughter off-camera. She was furious enough to want to storm over and give him a piece of her mind.
Paragliding—she truly didn’t dare try it!
In the end, Chen Chen and Fang Zhiyin had to paraglide together, but everyone else wanted to watch, so the group set off together to the mountaintop.
Forty minutes later, they arrived at the paragliding site. The director, knowing not all the guests enjoyed extreme sports, instructed the cameraman to get plenty of close-ups, especially to capture their nervous, timid, or otherwise interesting expressions.
No doubt the audience would find it entertaining.
Several male contestants were also somewhat afraid. Standing atop the mountain, none of them dared look down.
Fang Zhiyin’s legs were already beginning to give out.
No one noticed the moment when Xiao Wu, one of the male contestants, silently approached Fang Zhiyin from behind. He was rather short, about the same height as the women. Fang Zhiyin stood right at the edge; a step to the left and she would fall.
But she seemed oblivious, standing there quietly.
As Xiao Wu’s hand landed on her shoulder, Fang Zhiyin instantly sensed something and reacted. Then she heard Xiao Wu whisper, only loud enough for the two of them, “Fang Zhiyin, I want you dead!”
What?!
He wanted her dead?!
Just as the short Xiao Wu was about to shove Fang Zhiyin off the edge, Ouyang Junyan suddenly rushed over from somewhere. He moved with lightning speed, and with quick reflexes, pulled Fang Zhiyin to his side.
Fang Zhiyin’s heart pounded wildly as she stood there, shaken.
“Ah?!” she gasped belatedly, still in shock, and then saw Chen Chen dart over and, like a gust of wind, pin the much shorter Xiao Wu to the ground. “Xiao Wu, are you out of your mind?! Did you think everyone was blind and didn’t see you try to push Fang Zhiyin?!”
The others were stunned, but they’d all heard Chen Chen’s words and were shocked beyond measure.
The cameraman quickly focused the camera on them.
Leaning against Ouyang Junyan’s arm, Fang Zhiyin was still dazed. “You…”
“Fang Zhiyin, if I hadn’t come up, you’d have no idea where you’d have landed!” Ouyang Junyan said.
…Alright then, judging by his tone, it was still the thirty-five-year-old Ouyang Junyan!
“How were you so fast?”
“You talk too much,” Ouyang Junyan replied with exasperation.
The next second, Xiao Wu burst into tears, his acting skills on full display. No one knew why he was crying, but he sobbed so sorrowfully, as if he were the victim.
The director immediately called for the recording to stop.
Chen Chen and two other male guests held Xiao Wu down, but no matter what they asked, the man refused to speak, never explaining why he’d tried to harm Fang Zhiyin.
Fang Zhiyin’s legs were weak, and seeing her struggling to walk, Ouyang Junyan simply picked her up.
“Hey! Put me down!” Fang Zhiyin protested, stubborn as ever.
She didn’t know when it started, but unless it was the real Ouyang Junyan by her side, she always felt awkward about any intimate gesture from his other personalities.
“You nearly lost your life—are you really worried about this right now?” Ouyang Junyan frowned. “Even though you haven’t treated me well before, since you’re my wife, I’ll forgive you.”
…Who asked you for forgiveness!
Every so often, Chen Chen glanced back, seeing the two of them bickering even in their supposed closeness. His brow furrowed slightly.
Everyone gradually made their way back down the mountain.
“Zhiyin, should we call the police?” After they reached the base, Chen Chen hurried over to ask.
Everyone knew that if they called the police, Xiao Wu’s career would be over.
“Call the police. We absolutely must.” It was Ouyang Junyan who answered.
Fang Zhiyin hadn’t expected him to care that much about her.
But the next moment, he said something that nearly made her explode with anger. “Fang Zhiyin, could you please avoid making so many enemies when you’re out in public?”
