Chapter Forty-Two: Battlefield Rescue—The Protagonist of This Episode Is Not Mingchuan
"Mary, our supplies are running low! What should we do? It's been almost a month—hasn't the Allied Army arrived yet?" a nurse called out to a woman in a white coat.
"There’s nothing we can do. We're twenty meters underground; any signals we send are too weak. Though I’ve managed to learn from other channels that the Allied Army should reach this area in about a week, I can’t say for certain myself," replied a doctor who was moving boxes of medicine. She set her load down and wiped the sweat from her brow. "At least we haven’t run out of water. Otherwise, I doubt we’d have made it this far…" Her voice trailed into silence.
Suddenly, a cacophony erupted from the floor above, and the door leading to their level echoed with the roars of the Satans. "Why are the Satans making a racket again? Oh well, it happens every few days—we should be used to it by now."
"Alright, comrade," Dr. Mary said to the nurse who’d spoken first, "Once our food runs out in a week, we should finally be able to leave. By then, it won’t be Satans waiting for us, but the mighty soldiers of the Allied Army!"
But as they spoke, a knocking sounded at the security door. "Is anyone there? We’re with the European Allied Forces. Please open the door and let us in!" The voice was male, deep and alluring, as if trying to tempt the survivors to unlock the door.
"Ignore him. The Allied Army probably isn’t here yet! Whoever’s outside is likely one of those damned 'Impostors'—it’s not the first time they’ve tried this!" Mary refused to open the door to the man calling from outside. But he wasn’t backing down. "If no one answers, we’ll break the door down!"
"Don’t be afraid. If the Satans could break in, they’d have wiped us out long ago!" someone reassured the group. Yet the voice outside persisted: "Please step away from the door. I’m coming in!"
"They can’t possibly—" Mary began, but before she could finish the words "break in," a massive sword stabbed straight through the security door.
"Hide, quickly!" Instantly, every doctor and nurse in the corridor darted for cover.
The door was forced open, and it turned out to be Colt who had been calling out the whole time. He entered alone, his eyes sweeping over the scattered medicine—and even some still moving. He seemed to understand immediately. "I know, you think I’m a Satan, right? One of those wretched 'Impostors'? Well, I’m not. You can relax. But since you don’t trust me, I’ll just have to find each of you myself!"
With that, he used thermal imaging to locate the nearest person and "extracted" them from a cupboard. As soon as he swung open the cupboard door, the person inside lunged at him with a knife.
"Good grief! Lucky for me I’ve got the protection of the Bodhidharma, or you’d have killed me already! Wait—was I supposed to say that?"
Colt pulled the attacker out and ordered, "Sit tight and behave!" Then he walked over to a bed, yanked back the covers, and was greeted with a gun pressed to his chest.
"When you’re out in the field, always wear steel plates over your chest. Otherwise, with people like you around, I’d have died a thousand times over!"
Colt seemed to lose patience. He plunged his sword into the floor and shouted, "Enough! Come out! Stop hiding—I don’t have the patience for this!" He took a few steps back and flopped onto a sofa. Seeing him drop his guard, the two men tried to pull out his sword and kill him while he was distracted. But the sword, just like King Arthur’s Excalibur, could not be drawn by anyone but its chosen wielder.
"All right, that’s enough!" Dr. Mary, who had appeared at the very beginning, stepped in and stopped the two doctors. "I apologize for the rudeness. Hello, I’m the director of this hospital—Mary Maria."
"Nice to meet you, I’m Colt, deputy leader of Team Thunder from the Allied Army. As for our captain, he’s gone upstairs to meet the reinforcements. My job is to take charge here and handle the survivors."
"And now—?" Mary was still anxious.
"Don’t worry, everything’s fine now! By the way, we’ve already called for a medical team. We can have your surviving patients brought to the surface right away so the medics can transfer them to a better hospital!"
"Understood, Captain Colt," she nodded, then turned to the two men. "What are you standing around for? Start moving the wounded and get the elevator running again—hurry!"
While Colt busied himself with the survivors, Wenxin and her companions were locked in a desperate battle against the newly arisen Satans…
