Chapter Twelve: Entering the City Gate

When Fang Zheng first crossed through the gates of Hell, he indeed saw that absurdly massive door atop the city walls. However, relying on the shockwave from the shattered seal to blow the Ender Pearl away and teleport him, Fang Zheng could only confirm that he had reached the city wall itself. As for whether the gate was to his left or right, he simply could not tell. Even if he could determine direction, his flying speed was far too slow. Watching the frenzied golden-armored golems darting about, Fang Zheng found himself in a dilemma. “If I switch from spectator mode to creative mode and these guys don’t attack me, I could try spending more time breeding a superluminal horse to speed things up.”
In the game Minecraft, there are many bugs—or let’s say features. For example, offspring of two horses have a chance to inherit some attributes from their parents, such as speed. By throwing a swiftness potion on a horse, its speed temporarily increases; if it then breeds while under this effect by feeding it, its offspring can inherit this temporarily boosted speed as a permanent attribute. With enough patience, theoretically, the speed of block horses in Minecraft can be increased indefinitely. Of course, theory is one thing; in the game, it’s still limited by chunk loading and other factors.
But the world Fang Zheng had traversed into was likely not just a game, but a genuine reality. He had indeed spent time breeding horses capable of light-speed travel. Yet, watching those golden-armored golems that still hadn’t left, continuously hunting for him, he knew it would be difficult to leisurely breed block horses.
“Hmm, let me think…” After some thought, Fang Zheng switched back to creative mode and watched as those golems immediately locked onto him and charged. A roughly blue pixelated sphere appeared in his hand—it was a monster egg from his inventory, capable of summoning a patrol guardian. Even while tightly bound by countless golden rune chains, Fang Zheng was completely unfettered. His blocky arm waved through the membrane, and a patrol guardian appeared beside him. Although in the very next frame this relatively powerful monster was effortlessly slain, Fang Zheng confirmed one thing: these golden-armored golems did not discriminate between friend or foe, attacking everything equally.
So Fang Zheng devised a plan. He switched to phasing mode to slip out of the golems’ encirclement, then switched back to creative mode.

Simultaneously, he threw an Ender Pearl he had prepared toward the other side of the city wall, standing still while continuously summoning fresh monsters, waiting for the golems to discover and kill them. The shockwaves from their attacks did not affect him but could blow the airborne Ender Pearls farther. In Minecraft, Ender Pearls don’t have durability; they are consumables—once used, they’re gone. Unless thrown directly into lava to be destroyed, they cannot be broken by any attacks when held and thrown. However, shockwaves from TNT or End Crystals explosions can propel them farther, and once they travel a certain distance and touch a surface, they teleport the thrower. In the game, players exploit this to build cannons specifically designed for firing Ender Pearls, enabling teleportation over absurd distances.
When Fang Zheng escaped the Four Symbols Killing Array, he relied on this very feature to teleport himself to the wall. Now, he was simply repeating that action. Though not as exaggerated as the White Tiger and Vermilion Bird, the attacks of these golden-armored golems were terrifyingly powerful, with shockwaves propagating faster than light. Though controlling direction was tricky, by continually throwing monsters to attract attacks and using the shockwaves to push the Ender Pearls, one after another was carried across vast distances. This allowed Fang Zheng to gradually advance from one side of the city wall to the other.
After some time…
Looking at the city gate ahead—endless, carved with dragons and phoenixes, covered with countless powerful runes—Fang Zheng exhaled in relief. “Though it took quite some time, I’ve finally reached the main gate.” Maintaining his phased spectator mode, he flew toward that massive gate that stretched beyond sight. “Even if this is a world of immortals and martial heroes, there must be ordinary cultivators as well.” “Ordinary cultivators have to travel too, so no matter what, the gate should be thinner than the wall, or at least have some transportation, right?”

Staring at the endless corner of the gate, Fang Zheng prepared to observe its thickness in spectator mode. Penetrating the gate, he breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness.” Through the x-ray vision of spectator mode, he saw that the gate’s thickness was not in the same league as the wall’s. If the gate’s thickness was like a sheet of paper, the wall’s thickness was like an entire Earth—exaggerated beyond measure. This discrepancy was likely due to the materials used.
From Fang Zheng’s perspective, the gate’s opaque interior was a strange metallic substance, black with numerous dragon motifs. The runes inside looked far stronger and more magnificent than those on the walls. “Probably made from some rare, precious material. So even though it’s thinner than the wall, its defense wouldn’t be inferior.” “Anyone trying to breach the thinner gate would find its defenses far stronger than the walls.” “Though it doesn’t matter to me, since spectator mode ignores all defenses.”
After three full days of effort, Fang Zheng finally passed through the gate and arrived on the other side. He breathed deeply. “Finally through. Flying for several days straight, I was nearly driven mad. If it went on any longer, I might’ve had to just blast the door down.” Behind the gate, he excitedly gazed at the scene before him.
Countless metallic warships floated in the sky beyond the gate, some occasionally setting sail deeper into the city. Fang Zheng couldn’t help but feel a little strained. “Are those the transportation vehicles beyond the gate? The style is a bit… archaic.”
