“So fast! Too fast for me to react!” On a vast, still expanse of land, a blocky horse carried a blocky figure, galloping at incredible speed. The blocky horse moved like a phantom; with a gentle kick of its legs, it transformed into a streak of light, surging forward at a velocity barely perceptible to the naked eye.

Approaching a small slope, the rider quickly deployed a throwable slow-fall potion. Yet with a dull thud, the horse glowed red, its health dangerously close to depletion.

“That was close. I mistimed it again, nearly died.” The golden apple was immediately fed to the blocky horse to restore its health, preventing a fatal fall.

“Although I haven’t yet bred a lightspeed horse, one that runs 200 km per second will suffice for now.”

“Fortunately, this beast, though fast and able to leap high—blinking and it’s already over 200 km—won’t injure itself as long as it doesn’t jump; that saves me endless breeding efforts.”

Mc’s blocky horses are peculiar. When repeatedly enhanced with speed potions and bred, their offspring not only run fast but jump high. No matter how fast they crash into blocks, they take no damage; however, falling after a jump causes fall damage.

This has led to the current horse being the third one Mc has ridden. The first two died from self-inflicted fall damage due to accidental jumps.

Though slow-fall potions prevent fall damage, the horse’s speed and jump height are so extreme, and the occasional ground pits so large, that the potion’s effect means Mc takes forever to descend.

Slow-fall potions reduce gravity from 32 m/s² to 4 m/s² and terminal velocity from 78.4 m/s to 9.8 m/s. This causes a problem—while under the potion’s effect, descent is agonizingly slow.

Though ender pearls can be thrown to teleport to the ground, when riding a horse, the player teleports alone, leaving the horse behind, making retrieval troublesome.

Galloping like a phantom across the land atop the blocky horse, Mc searched intently for the source of an ancient, hoarse voice.

Fortunately, the blocky figure’s body was unharmed and unaffected by sound volume.

To Mc’s ears, no matter how loud a sound was, it never drowned out others or exceeded perception range.

Using sound intensity and simple triangulation, Mc finally discerned the general direction: a vast, pitch-black abyss, like a star crashed down, forming a deep chasm.

The blocky horse thundered on until, at the abyss’s deepest end, Mc found the source of the sound.

There lay a vast dark red blood lake, at the center of which stood a towering black mountain.

“The celestial realm is sealed; the immortal path has no way forward...” The unfamiliar words carried a profound sadness and regret that resonated deeply.

Mc gazed at the blood lake. “Is this the blood of an immortal cultivator?”

He muttered to himself, “According to typical cultivation novels, the blood of such a high-level cultivator should be quite valuable. I’ll fill a bucket first.”

With a wave of an empty iron bucket, a square-shaped gap appeared in the blood lake, and an item was added to his creative mode inventory.

However, filling the bucket seemed to disturb something.

The black mountain standing in the lake’s center fell silent, the continuous voice abruptly ceasing.

The immense dark red lake began to stir mysteriously, as if alive, gradually flowing toward the black mountain.

A tremendous pressure radiated outward from the mountain, growing stronger, sweeping everything nearby, causing numerous runes to materialize in the void.

Mc observed as the blood surged into the black mountain, a faint glow emanating from it, lifting the mountain to hover.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Heartbeat-like sounds issued from the black mountain. Golden runes shimmered and flowed in the void, seemingly battling the black mountain.

“Huh? Are these fragments of something?” After the mountain floated, Mc noticed it was angular; a sharp fragment originally embedded beneath the lake’s surface.

It resembled the broken tip of a blade.

As time passed, the floating black mountain brightened, shifting from pure black to pristine white, forming the silhouette of a complete blade alongside a white phantom.

A slender blade gleaming like jade, shaped like a waning crescent moon.

The phantom crescent blade gradually faded with time, reverting to a broken black tip; the golden runes in the void dissolved.

The blood clinging to the black shard transformed into a dark red waterfall, gathering back into a vast lake.

“The celestial realm is sealed; the immortal path has no way forward...” The familiar sorrowful voice echoed again.

“Hmm, the blood seems darker now,” Mc observed as the lake’s waves surged, noting the blood’s color had dimmed somewhat.

“Could this mean the blood belongs to the owner of that blade tip fragment?”

After some thought, Mc dismounted and flew to the lake’s center to examine the black mountain more closely—and was startled.

At the peak of the black mountain, Mc found the source of the continuous voice.

It was a humanoid phantom formed from faint blood mist mixed with dim white light.

The apparition’s entire body was faint and flickering, seeming on the verge of collapse. Its form was blurred, with only a pair of eyes shining more brightly.

Staring into those eyes, Mc was surprised. “Huh? Anime crescent moon eyes?”

The eyes resembled the crescent-shaped pupils often seen in anime, like two waning moons set within the eyes—quite distinctive.

Standing before the phantom, Mc muttered questions, “Hey, are you alive? Are you human? Can you understand me? Can you see me? Are you an NPC? A player? Good or evil? What do the words you keep repeating mean...”

Mc babbled on, gesturing wildly to catch its attention, but after a long while, the phantom remained unresponsive, leaving him disappointed.

He sighed, “Ah, it’s just another NPC. If this really is a cultivation game, the developers must be really bored—putting advanced voice scripts in a frozen map to attract players. I came all this way, and it’s still a brainless NPC…”

“Let’s move on and check elsewhere.” Just as Mc turned to leave, he noticed the phantom’s eyes darted toward him.

?!

Mc was instantly thrilled. “You’re alive? You’re alive? You’re alive?”

“If you’re alive, say something! Say something! Why won’t you talk? Don’t you understand me? Can you move at least?”

Yet the phantom seemed to ignore him again.

Mc grew desperate. After so much effort to find a seemingly living being, it refused to respond.

Frustrated, he flew back and forth before gazing down at the blood lake, struck by a thought.

“According to cultivation novel tropes, could this be the lingering soul of the blood lake’s owner?”

“Usually, in such stories, a powerful cultivator’s body is shattered, leaving only a trace of blood, with the broken soul preserved and barely surviving within a treasure’s fragment.”

“Maybe it’s too badly injured to speak rationally?”

“I have to try healing it!”
